Howdy y’all! Posting to check if anyone could recommend a free screen-capturing tool for making User Guides.  Many come with watermarks if free. Just thinking if paid ones are the only option.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! If you’re looking for a simple screen-capturing tool, I suggest trying out Loom. It’s free and web-based, so you don’t have to download anything. Plus, it has some great editing features to help you create polished user guides.

Hello! For a free screen-capturing tool, I’d recommend checking out ShareX. It’s a lightweight and customizable screen recorder that lets you capture full screens, windows, or specific regions. Plus, it also has an easy-to-use image editor built in.

Of course I mostly create tutorials using Captivate or sometimes Snagit, both non free.

However for quick screenshots I often use the Snipping tool, combined with Paint 3D for editing, which are shipping both for free in Windows. Did you check them out? I can imagine a User guide created with a text editor or a desktop publishing application using those screenshots. That was the way I created my courses for software apps before I discovered Captivate two decades ago. They will not be interactive of course.

If you want to capture a video, I just read this recent article, maybe it can help you too?

Hey Olivia! I’d recommend checking out OBS Studio – it’s a free and open-source screen recording software that’s perfect for capturing user guides. It’s easy to use and has a variety of customization options for your recordings. Let me know how you find it
