Open Ended Questions in Captivate 12.5
April 14, 2025

How do I create an open ended question in Captivate 12.5 (no correct answer – “What did you observe?”)  I want the answers reported back to the LMS for later review.  I have tried creating a Short Answer quiz slide, but it requires me to add an answer.  If I leave it blank, it’s always an incorrect answer.  There are no polling slide options either.  I tried creating a slide with a text box and marking the reporting option to report to the LMS, but the LMS never get’s the answer as they say they need the description to report the answer and there is no place to add a description (the actual question to report) when creating a reportable text box.  I do see it reporting the transaction ID, but never the text within.  I really need to get open answers working.  Any ideas?  I did report this as a bug in the feedback forum, but not sure.

Thanks Paul, I had already tried what you showed, however every time I leave the answer blank, it tells the user that the answer is incorrect.   I did review many of your videos and find them very helpful.  Thanks for being a great resource!

Thanks Paul, I tried all that, exactly the way you show.  If I leave the answer blank, the user always gets a message that the answer is incorrect.  If I use a text input box, only the interaction ID posts to the LMS, but not the text within because there is no place to add the SCORM required description field

Hello, the issue with creating text input boxes and making them reportable in Captivate 12.5 is that the description field is missing and there is no way to enter them (usually this is the question).  According to my LMS provider, a description is required in order for the LMS to receive the entered text back.  I worked with an Adobe rep. who confirmed this and a bug ticket was entered.  I was able to demo the use case with both Adobe and the LMS provider on the call.  Bug  #CPNXT-24637.

I created a quick and dirty video (maybe make something more formal later): https://youtu.be/dkWRMJr3818

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

For this use case, you may consider using Input Fields in the new Adobe Captivate. These allow learners to enter text, which can also be reported to an LMS. You may refer to this help article for more details: https://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/help/adding-input-field-captivate-project.html

We hope this information addresses your query. You may also contact the technical support team directly via phone (+1-800-833-6687) or chat (https://www.adobe.com/getsupport) for assistance.
