Adobe Captivate came up as a software to use to create word searches. I haven’t tried it yet, but I want it to be interactive, so that people can highlight the words they find. I think that’s possible, but I’m curious what the accessibility features are for screen readers. Any idea?

Best Practices in Captivate 12.5 for Accessibility:

If you go ahead with Captivate for this, here’s what to do:

  1. Set Tab Order Manually: Use the Tab Order panel to ensure a logical navigation path.

  2. Use Descriptive Labels: Label every object (including buttons and interactive elements) so screen readers can identify them.

  3. Provide an Alternative Path: For games like word searches, include a screen-reader-friendly alternative such as:

    • A list of words with checkboxes

    • Text descriptions of where each word is hidden (“The word ‘ACCESS’ is found vertically starting at row 2, column 3.”)

  4. Test with Real Screen Readers: Use tools like NVDA (free) or JAWS with Chrome or Edge to test your course—don’t rely solely on Captivate’s preview mode.
